CONCEPT
In CORALS, Elizabeth Nenarokov intertwines art and environmental awareness, guiding viewers on a contemplative journey through the fragile beauty and precarious fate of coral reefs.
Elizabeth Nenarokov addresses the critical issues facing coral reefs—problems often hidden beneath the ocean's surface, out of sight and mind. By bringing this urgent conversation to the forefront through her monumental installation, she illuminates the life cycle of corals in three stages: vibrant life, fading hues, and silent whiteness.
This immersive experience encourages viewers to reflect on their relationship with nature and the impact of human actions. Each person is invited to choose their own path—whether to move from vibrancy to fading or to inspire renewal and restoration. Nenarokov's work serves as a call to action, urging us to reduce pollution and protect our planet's fragile ecosystems before it’s too late. This immersive installation unfolds in three poignant parts, each reflecting the life cycle of these vital ecosystems and humanity's role in their preservation.
The first segment, "Living" celebrates the vibrancy of healthy coral ecosystems. Handcrafted ceramic corals submerged in water, adorned with vivid glazes, evoke the dynamic beauty beneath the waves—an ecosystem teeming with life.
Transitioning to "Fading Hues" the installation reveals the gradual degradation of coral reefs due to pollution and neglect. Here, corals bear the marks of damage, while bleached forms above water symbolize their slow decline, highlighting the fragility of marine life and the urgent need for intervention.
The final phase, "Silent Whiteness", presents barren, white corals—symbols of extinction and loss. This stark conclusion serves as a solemn reminder of what is at stake, yet embodies a quiet hope through the use of clay infused with calcium carbonate (CaCO3), symbolizing the potential for renewal and restoration.
Through CORALS, Nenarokov urges viewers to reflect on our connection to nature and the critical importance of safeguarding fragile marine ecosystems before they fall into irreversible silence.
